In the event of a fire, Smoke Heat Exhaust Ventilation Systems (SHEVS) are designed to vent smoke and hot gases at roof level and low level replacement air is drawn into the building through EN12101-2 tested natural ventilators. This will form a stable layer below the ceiling so that a clear ‘smoke free’ layer is maintained below the smoke. The clear layer should be of sufficient height to allow for the safe means of escape and to aid fire-fighting operations.
